Featuring Elizabeth B. Hart, MD & Mary McPherson, PharmD, BCPS, CPE

Elizabeth Hart, MD is a family physician with board certification in Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.  She serves as Associate Medical Director for HealthReach Hospice in Waterville and Skowhegan and as Medical Director for a statewide advance care planning initiative of the Maine Hospice Council and Center for End-of-Life Care. Prior to the Spring of 2011, when she transitioned to her current positions, her clinical practice for many years focused primarily on caring for people with dementia in long-term care at MaineGeneral Rehab and Nursing Care. An honors graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and Dartmouth Medical School, she completed residency and her geriatric fellowship at Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency.  She recently completed a Practice Change Fellowship, a geriatric leadership program supported by the Atlantic Philanthropies and the John A Hartford Foundation. Her fellowship facilitated a collaborative partnership with the Maine Hospice Council and the Maine Office of Elder Services to support her role as one of the physician leaders of the Maine POLST Coalition and to develop an advance care planning initiative “Cultivating Meaningful Conversations to Guide Care.”

 

Mary Lynn McPherson, Pharm.D., BCPS,CPE, is Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore. She has maintained a practice in both hospice and palliative care, and ambulatory care her entire career. At present, Dr. McPherson is the Director of Pharmacotherapy Services at UniversityCare Waxter in Baltimore. Dr. McPherson teaches extensively in the Pharm.D. curriculum on pain management and end of life care, including didactic and experiential content. She also developed one of the first and few palliative care pharmacy residencies in the U.S.

Dr. McPherson serves on the Board of the Hospice Network of Maryland and is also President of the American Society of Pain Educators. McPherson is a Fellow in the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists and the American Pharmacists Association. She has received many honors for her work, including the American Pharmacists Association Distinguished Achievement Award in Specialized Practice, the Maryland Pharmacists Association Innovative Practice Award, and the Maryland Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists W. Purdum Lifetime Achievement Award. She has written four books, and many book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on pain management, palliative care, and other topics.
